For every property owner in an area that has ticks, keeping ticks off of your property can be a challenge.  With options range from do-it-yourself solutions, to canned products, all the way through to engaging professional services, it can be hard to determine what is the best path for you.

Professional Tick Prevention Services

Generally, our recommendation is to at a minimum consider the professional services option, if only to fully understand what is entailed and if this is a good option for you.  A big upside to this is, of course, you are bringing a professional onto your property and in theory we can assume a professional service provider will be doing everything they possibly can to effectively manage ticks off of your property while also doing so in a way that will be safe for both your loved ones and potentially your pets and other wild life that might cross your property.  In addition there are some acaricides (pesticides or insecticides that kill ticks) that are only available for use by licensed professionals.

Do It Yourself Exterior Tick Prevention Ideas

In addition there are a number of over the counter options available as well as a few land management options that can also work.

Regarding land management, a great place to start is by attempting to minimize the presence of tick host animals across your property.  This would include having deer on your property (fencing as well as spraying your foliage to help make your property less attractive to roaming deer), and of course paying attention to areas that might attract small rodents such as mice such as stone walls.  Ticks also tend to be found more often on areas that are within 8 feet of the tree lines, and generally the sunnier areas of a property tend to have less ticks.  Other “best practices” include regularly mowing your lawn, and of also removing all leaves and general debris from your property in order to not provide additional prime hosting spaces for ticks to camp out in.

Beyond the landscaping there are also a host of over-the-counter pesticides available – we would just caution that before you go out and aggressively treat your property that you make sure to read the labels to ensure that you are not inadvertently introducing an unhealthy exterior.

Keeping Ticks Out of Your Interiors

While not as common, on occasion ticks can “infest” your interior spaces as well.  Much as we’ve outlined above, the course of action here is to either engage a professional services firm or to attempt a go it alone approach.  In any event, please be prepared to deliver multiple tick removal treatments over the course of a 90 plus day cycle to ensure that you have properly managed to remove all the existing ticks as well as accounting for any breeding cycles.
